5 Steps to Setting Up a Book Club
Contrary to popular belief, reading can be a social activity! Book clubs are a great way for like-minded people to come together to share their favourite reads and discuss them over good coffee.
Step 1: Getting Started
Simply gather enough friends to begin. Start with a core group of 3 to 4 friends, and grow it from there. Book clubs ideally need about 8 to 12 people to be successful.
Step 2: Deciding on your type of book club
Decisions, decisions, decisions. What is your book club going to read – fiction, non-fiction? What is the tone of the book club – literary, light or in between? This is the best time to exercise your creativity on the kind of book club that you want and the activities your members will get up to!
Step 3: The practical matters
The devil is in the details and you will need to iron out these matters with your book club members. When, where and how is the book club going to be held. With everyone's busy schedules these days, a monthly meet-up at a conducive place (think good coffee and cake) is recommended.
Step 4: Discussing the book
Shhhh… we know that not everyone has finished reading or even read the book but doing a bit of preparation before the book club session can help to ensure that the conversation flows without awkward silences. Consider appointing a different person each time to come up with discussion questions that can help to keep the conversation going (and bring up to speed those who did not read the book).
Step 5: Enjoy
A book club is ultimately a time and place for you to enjoy each other's company in the presence of a book. So don't forget to relax and enjoy the discussion.
