About Us

The National Reading Movement is a 5-year campaign by the National Library Board (NLB) to encourage all to Read More, Read Widely and Read Together. NLB will be running programmes to engage more adults to read, promote reading in mother tongue languages and collaborate with the community to build a vibrant reading culture in Singapore. Everyone can also look forward to the inaugural National Reading Day on 30 July with exciting reading activities island-wide.

With the National Reading Movement, NLB calls on all to Read More, Read Widely and Read Together, as we build a nation of readers.

First National Reading Day (30th July 2016)

The National Reading Day is a community-centric movement to celebrate the joy and importance of reading as a nation. Not only will libraries play a part in providing pop-up reading activities and showcase curated reads for Singaporeans, organisations, institutions and individuals will be encouraged to organise reading activities. NLB will also be organising a charity drive, Read for Books, where every person who participates in the drive will result in books being donated to kidsREAD Club members and other beneficiaries.

Read for Books

As part of the National Reading Day, we plan to organise a week-long event where 1 book will be donated for every 10 people who read for 15 minutes. The books will be donated to NLB’s kidsREAD programme (details below) children. This event aims to raise awareness of the reading message and provide opportunities for all to Read Together. The charity drive will be done through the following avenues:

  1. Read For Books @ Your Own Space (23 to 30 July 2016)

    Members of the public can read offsite and upload a group picture of their participation on their Facebook page before 30th July, 5pm and hashtag #readforbookssg (Remember to change the privacy setting of your post to public.)

    Organizations and schools can read offsite and submit a group picture of their participation to by 30th Jul, 5pm.

  2. Read For Books @ National Library Plaza & 3 Regional Libraries (30 July 2016)

    Happening on 30th July as part of National Reading Day, members of the public are welcome to walk in and join in the Read for Books event, while participating organizations will be scheduled to participate. Satellite stations in the regional libraries will also be set up that day.


The kidsREAD programme is a nationwide reading programme officially launched on 23 April 2004 by then Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. kidsREAD is a collaborative effort by the NLB together with the People’s Association (PA) and five self-help groups to promote the love of reading and cultivate good reading habits among young Singaporeans, specifically children from low-income families. The target audience of kidsREAD is children between the ages of 4 and 8, regardless of race or religion. As of April 2016, there are over 150 kidsREAD clubs and 3000 young members.

Pledging Drive

The National Library Board (NLB) encourages all to make their pledge to Read More, Read Widely and Read Together! This 2-month long pledging drive held between 3 June and 30 July 2016 encourages everyone to pledge to make time to read, and spread the love of reading.

National Reading Day

This year is the inaugural year for the National Reading Day which is an annual community centric movement that celebrates the joy and importance of reading as a nation.

Read For Books

Read For Books is an initiative calling all to come together to read for a good cause. The week-long programme from 23 to 30 July will donate a book to the National Library Board’s kidsREAD club beneficiaries from less privileged families for every 10 people who read for 15 minutes.

Read! Fest

Read! Fest is an annual festival organized by the National Library Board (NLB) to celebrate reading. Into its third edition this year, Read! Fest 2016 is centered on the theme “New Adventures”. Everyone can look forward to over 170 literary programmes and panel discussions in store for them in this 2-month programme.
